Puffy Mattress Review
The Puffy mattress comes with a big reputation, and has already received a lot of attention from mainstream media outlets. The Puffy was recently featured on the Ellen DeGeneres show, where it was praised highly. Audience members in attendance that day each received a free Puffy mattress, in an act of good will (and good marketing) by the premium bedding company.
The Puffy has also been hailed as ‘the internet’s most comfortable mattress’ – not exactly a modest statement. So with all of this praise on its shoulders, does the Puffy deliver on its premium reputation?
Well, this all-foam model comes with three layers of construction materials, not including the breathable, stretch-knit cover. Its foam is infused with cooling gel, and uses all CertiPUR-US graded materials. The bed is marketed as being like sleeping on a cloud – hence the Puffy name.
The bed is made to order in U.S factories and shipping is free to all states except Alaska and Hawaii. With a lengthy trial period and lifetime warranty to boot, the Puffy presents an intriguing prospect in the memory-foam world.
We’ve put together this in-depth review which will break down everything you need to know about the Puffy mattress. We’ll analyze its most important features and compare it to other similar mattresses on the market today.
As always, it makes sense to get to know the product before you buy it. So read on, and find out everything you need to know about the Puffy mattress.

Puffy Mattress Feel
The Puffy mattress is aimed towards the largest market of sleepers – that being the medium-firm range – and falls at around a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Even though the bed falls closer to being firm than soft, it still provides plenty of luxurious comfort, as you sink into the top layer of foam, wrapped in an extremely comfortable stretch-knit cover.
The bottom two layers of the mattress are made from the same high-density, support-oriented materials, which provide excellent contouring and stability for the gel-foam layer above. More mention will be made of this in the ‘Materials’ section of this review.
The 3-inches of gel-infused foam, made using Puffy’s ‘Cooling Cloud’ technology, provides a soft surface that will cradle your body as you sleep, and provide the snugness and contouring which all-foam mattresses are famous for.
As mentioned earlier, the Puffy is hailed by many as the most comfortable mattress in the world. This will always come down to individual preference, and is basically just a marketing tool. However, many customers agree with the bold claim, and vouch for its exceedingly luxurious comfort. We found the puffy to fall in the 7-7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
Overall, we found no complaints with the Puffy. As it falls close to the medium firmness range, it is suitable for all sleepers.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.65 out of 5 for comfort and feel.
Puffy Mattress Delivery & Setup
All Puffy mattresses are made to order, so will take a couple of days to prepare after your order has been placed. From there, delivery will take around 3-6 business days depending on location.
The Puffy ships free to all 48 contiguous U.S states, while delivery to Alaska and Hawaii costs an extra $150. This is to be expected given the increased delivery effort required to get the mattress to these provinces. Free shipping also applies to most areas of Canada.
Since the mattresses are made to order, the length of compression and packaging time is kept to a minimum, resulting in less off-gassing, and a shorter de-compression time once opened. The delivery box is 19x19x42 inches in size, and is easy enough to manoeuvre and unpack. Take care when opening so that you don’t damage the mattress. Once opened, it should be fully expanded in a few hours. As always, move the box into your desired room before opening. The compressed mattress is not very big, so shouldn’t present too much trouble upon opening. However, once fully expanded the bed will naturally become bigger and more awkward to move, so be aware.
The free shipping also applies to returns, so if you decide the bed isn’t for you during the free trial period, just contact the company and they will have the mattress removed, to be donated or disposed of in an appropriate manner.
PUFFY UNBOXING
Puffy Mattress Off Gassing
As with most memory-foam mattresses, you may notice a very faint ‘new mattress’ smell upon opening the Puffy mattress. This is completely normal and should not be a major cause of concern. All mattresses, all pieces of furniture, clothes, and even books come with a ‘new smell’, and is simply part of bringing new materials and fabrics into your house.
The Puffy mattress uses CertiPUR-US certified foams, which are free from harmful chemicals, and are made using an environmentally friendly process, with low emissions. The Puffy mattresses are also made to order, and will only be in their packaging for a few days at the most, so this should reduce the possibility of excessive off-gassing.
When you receive the mattress, allow it to air out for 24-36 hours in a well-ventilated room. This should allow any ‘new material’ smell to dissipate. If you are particularly sensitive to smell, extend the airing out period until you feel the smell is gone. Standing the mattress up so that it stands freely and unobstructed should help with this process.
Off-gassing will affect some people more than others, but shouldn’t present a major problem overall. By the time you get your mattress protector and sheets on the bed, any scent should be completely unnoticeable.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.5 out of 5 for off-gassing.
Motion Isolation Test
This is one area where the Puffy shines. As with all memory-foam mattresses, the Puffy sacrifices bounce, and in return it gains incredible motion isolation properties.
The memory-foam absorbs just about every bit of motion disturbance you can throw at it, making it a good choice for light sleepers, or those with partners. The foam absorbs pressure in isolated areas, so you could have a coffee-cup sitting on the bed and you wouldn’t have to worry about it being tipped by your movements.
Ultimately, the Puffy performs as you would expect a top-end memory-foam mattress to perform, and it scores well here.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.7 out of 5 for motion reduction.
Edge Support Test
It’s true that all-foam mattresses do not necessarily prioritise edge support. However, due to the reactive, contouring abilities of the memory-foam, your body will find a snug enough position on the bed to make edge-support a non-issue.
Sitting directly on the edge of the bed will result in significant sinkage. However, as you will only be sitting in this position once or twice a day (to get dressed or slip on your shoes), it won’t present too much of a problem. As with all foam mattresses, you may see edge-deterioration over time, but it will be a long time, and the mattress has a lifetime warranty anyway so you have nothing to fear.
The base layer of the mattress is made of high-durability, dense materials, and does provide some structural stability to the bed, including its edges. Overall, while the edge-support will not be comparable to hybrid or spring models, there is enough structural integrity present in the Puffy mattress to make for decent edge support.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.55 out of 5 for edge support.
Bounce & Foam Response
For a modern mattress with three layers of memory foam, you’d expect the Nectar to perform well here. Thankfully, it does.
The sheer softness and responsiveness of the Nectar means that any pressure applied to one part of the surface does not spread to other parts. You can comfortably sit a cup of coffee next to you on the bed and not have to worry about it tipping over. Likewise, it’s easy to place a laptop, phone, pens and files on the bed without having them roll towards you as you manoeuvre on the surface.
For people sharing the bed, any motion disturbance is kept to a minimum, and you should be able to move around easily without disturbing the person next to you.
We give the Nectar Sleep Mattress 4.9 out of 5 for motion reduction.
Temperature
The Puffy has been designed with temperature regulation in mind – this should provide some reassurance for those hesitant to buy a memory-foam mattress due to their reputation for holding on to heat.
The uppermost layer of foam is infused with cooling gel, which refuses to hold onto heat, and allows it to spread over the material and eventually dissipate outwards. The gel-infused layer is also made of a breathable material, meaning air can flow throughout. Puffy await the patent for the technology used in this layer, which they term ‘Cooling Cloud’.
The mattress cover is made from soft, plush materials and is stretch-knit for extra durability. With lots of small pores, the cover is sufficiently aerated and breathable enough to allow for excellent air-flow and heat-dissipation. The cover effectively wicks away moisture and heat, and allows for a clean, cool sleeping experience.
The base support layer of the mattress has been designed to keep the sleeper somewhat above the bed, meaning you won’t sink too far into the mattress and cause the heavy compression which often results in heat build up.
Overall, the Puffy outperforms many similar memory-foam mattresses when it comes to temperature regulation. Don’t be put off by its all-foam construction; the Puffy has enough tricks up its sleeve to make overheating a non-issue.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.65 out of 5 for temperature.
Puffy Construction
-
The main comfort layer is the 3-inch top layer of gel-infused memory foam, which uses Puffy’s ‘Cooling Cloud’ technology. This heat-resistant layer does not hold onto heat. Rather, it releases and dissipates excess heat, and allows for breathability with its aerated design.
-
The support layer is actually a double layer of firm, durable, core support foam, which equals 7-inches in total thickness. This support layer performs several tasks, including providing structural support, and allowing air to circulate.
-
The bed equals a total of 10-inches in size. This may seem small for some modern mattresses, and many may question why the Puffy only uses two real, distinct layers of materials rather than the industry standard of three.
-
The cover, while breathable and made with a stretch-knit process, is not quilted or padded.
-
Whatever their reasoning was with the construction, the Puffy still offers sleepers enough hi-tech, durable materials to make for a luxury experience.
-
NOTE: In the spring of 2018, the company changed the materials in the Puffy mattress to include 4-inches of memory foam instead of 3. And they changed the base layer from 7 to 6-inches. The updated model is the one you should receive if you decide to purchase the Puffy Mattress.
-
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.55 out of 5 for materials.
PuffyTrial & Warranty
Any modern mattress purchase wouldn’t be complete without the option of a free sleep trial, and the Puffy doesn’t disappoint here. With a 101-night risk free trial, Puffy give you plenty of time to get to know the contours of the mattress and decide whether or not it’s for you.
The company recommend you sleep on the mattress for around 3-4 weeks before making your decision, as it will take you time to fully adapt to the new sleeping conditions. If you do decide the mattress isn’t for you, Puffy will pick it up from your home, free of charge, and donate the mattress to charity, while refunding all of your purchase cost.
For Alaska or Hawaii citizens, be aware that Puffy will not refund the shipping costs of your returns.
The warranty offered by Puffy lasts a lifetime. Yes, that’s a full, free lifetime warranty, which will cover any production faults you may find. If a fault is found to be the responsibility of the manufacturer, they will either repair or replace the mattress according to your wishes. For a full rundown of what damages are covered in the warranty, see the manufacturer’s website.
Returning the mattress after during the period of the warranty will incur a delivery charge of $50 each way. However this will be waived if it is confirmed that the defect is the fault of the manufacturer.
Puffy also offer a ‘Quick Sleep’ service, where after the first ten years of the warranty they will give you a new mattress for half the price of your original purchase, rather than carrying out repairs. This could prove a very profitable option for the consumer, as mattress technology will likely advance rapidly in the next decade.
Overall, the Puffy presents enough safety options with its generous trial and warranty period. Other companies offer longer trial periods, but the lifetime warranty makes up for a deficit in this regard.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.8 out of 5 for trials and warranty.
Puffy Value & Recommendation
The Puffy currently comes in queen-size for the price of $950 – that’s with a $200 coupon currently in place.
This might seem a bit of a stretch for a mattress with only two real layers of technology, but the Puffy uses its materials well, and achieve a similar level of comfort to much higher-priced mattresses. The Puffy has a big reputation, with nation-wide appeal, and appearances on primetime tv-shows. With that in mind, it’s probably no surprise that the company can afford to set a premium price for their product.
With that said, a queen-sized, premium memory-foam mattress for under $1,000 is still pretty good.
We give the Puffy Mattress 4.5 for overall value and recommendation.
We recommend this mattress to anyone who:
-
Is a combination sleeper.
-
Prefers slightly firm to too soft.
-
Needs the contouring support of memory-foam.
-
Prefers motion isolation to all-round bounce.
-
Wants to feel what it’s like to sleep on ‘the internet’s most comfortable mattress’.
-
Desires the protection of a lifetime warranty.
-
Isn’t too worried about a lack of dedicated edge support.
The Puffy’s comfort matches its reputation. This is a very popular brand with nationwide appeal. A new sale is made every few minutes on the Puffy website, and its popularity doesn’t look like coming to a halt any time soon.
